CONGRATULATIONS!! AND THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO ENTERED!!
A couple of weeks ago, I wrote a blog post entitled, “Who Are You…Really?” which was about where our existence springs from and who we are on a meta level.
This week, I’d like to talk about the individual story – Who. Are. YOU?
On my weekly internet TV program I’ve been teaching for the past two weeks about: “Telling YOUR Story” and helping my listeners craft the story of how they got into the metaphysical business they’re in.
BUT HERE’S THE DEAL:
No matter what you do for a living, if you have a story to tell, it sets you apart from the pack.
It doesn’t matter if you’re a cook or a baker or a candlestick maker – he or she who has a story has an audience…and an audience will bring you business.
Let’s say you’re an accountant. Let’s say that when you were a child, your family went on vacations for weeks at a time, and you – at the tender age of 12 – were asked to keep track of every penny spent on the trip: gas, snacks, hotels, campgrounds, and so forth. Your parents asked you to do this task because #1: it would keep you busy, and #2: it might give them usable information for future trips.
That’s a nice little story. Those thinking of hiring you would get a feel for where your calling originated, and they’d also feel a human connection to your child-self.
Now that you’ve identified your story, it’s time to write it out – in detail. You must be very, very specific and put as much detail into the story as possible. An example of detail might be: “although I had scrupulously kept the books for the trip, I was getting bored. My dad picked up on this, so at a dusty old gas station in western Oklahoma, he taught me how to compute the mileage that the car was getting! Oh Joy! More mysteries to solve!!”
Why do this?
Because when someone asks you, “what made you decide to become an accountant?” you have an answer that will stick in their mind. You’ve set yourself apart. You are MORE than an accountant, you’re a person with a great story who can do their books!
Let’s say you’re an accountant but your story is: “my parents made me take accounting so I would have a solid career path.” Adding under your breath – (“and I HATE it!”)
If that’s the case, what aspect of your life CAN you tell a story about? Because THAT is where your heart is – and THAT is where people will connect with you.
THAT is what makes you, YOU!
